Organisation Overview
• Name of Organisation: Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS trust
• Type of Healthcare Setting: Hospital
• Department/Team Using Eolas: Anaesthetics
Challenges Before Eolas
Before Eolas we spent a huge amount of time constructing guidelines and protocols, only to find that no one could access them as they were only available on Trust computers in the hospital, behind the worst search engine you could possibly design, and saved by a separate department who took 3 months to update any changes.
Implementation Experience
Feedback was received within a week from people who had used it that it was ‘game changing’ and they found it very simple to learn.
Efficiency and Speed
It has really helped in preparation for patients ahead of time, as people can now search documents on their phones/devices/laptops wherever they are, including at home or at a different hospital. I think that because there isn’t the laborious process to check guidelines now, people are looking at them more routinely, so get the right information first time. I don’t think it’s even as simple as clinicians being able to access documents faster, it’s more that they can access them at all!
Guideline Utilisation Impact on Patient Care
Having easy access to documents has encouraged clinicians to write guidelines for more situations, and put effort into making them really excellent,. Before, when we knew that no one would really be using them, it was hard to see the point.
We also use it to store documents for patient information, and use the QR code option to give this information to patients at pre-op visits or clinic appointments, which means we aren’t searching around for a printed copy or just not giving written information at all, as happened before.
Staff Satisfaction
Everyone is very positive about having the app in their pocket, and in an easily searchable way. The keyword search that actually works is a revelation to them!

I had been trying to find a way to share documents and information around our department of several hundred people for over a decade, and it had always failed. The email I received describing the app seemed to list every single one of my requirements and I had to find a way to give it a go. What really stood out in those early days was how responsive Declan was to requests and suggestions, and how easy it was to set it all up and get started. The structure was exactly how I would have designed it myself, it was entirely intuitive. We’ve been using it now for some years, and as a result it was also adopted by other large departments (ED, ICU etc) in our hospital.
